The Experience

Ever wondered what it’s like to see straight through the water as you paddle? That’s pretty much how our day started in Leeward, climbing into these clear kayaks with salt drying on my hands already. Our guide—his name was Marcus, super patient—showed us how to steer without spinning in circles (I still managed to bump a mangrove root). The sun was out but not too harsh, just that kind of soft heat you get in the Turks & Caicos mornings. You could hear little pops from the roots under the water, and sometimes a fish would dart by so close it almost felt like we were floating above an aquarium.

I didn’t expect to see so much life right under us—Marcus pointed out a turtle gliding along, then suddenly there was this shadow moving fast beneath my kayak. “Lemon shark,” he said, way calmer than I felt. It wasn’t huge or anything, but still, my heart did this weird skip. There were these moments of total quiet where all you heard was the paddle dipping in and out of the water. I tried to remember the names of some birds he mentioned (I forgot most of them), but it felt good just listening to him talk about how the mangroves keep everything balanced here.

When we reached Iguana Island, it got louder—iguanas everywhere, scurrying over rocks and eyeing us like we’d brought snacks (we hadn’t). Their skin looked rougher up close than I expected; one even let me get within a few feet before flicking its tail at me. Marcus told us about their habits and how they’ve survived storms here for years. The air smelled salty-sweet with a hint of something green I couldn’t place—maybe seaweed? We lingered longer than planned because no one wanted to leave that odd feeling of being watched by lizards who didn’t care if you were impressed or not.

I still think about that stretch back through the mangroves—the light shifting as clouds rolled over, everyone quieter than before. It’s funny how being on the water makes time feel different. If you’re curious what Leeward really feels like beyond the beaches, this is probably it.

What’s included

Your day includes use of a clear kayak guided by a local expert through Leeward’s mangroves and over to Iguana Island; bottled water is provided along the way so you can focus on paddling—and maybe spotting those elusive lemon sharks—without worrying about thirst sneaking up on you mid-tour.
