The experience

What's the water actually like when you get there? The Leeward Reef is part of the third-largest barrier reef system in the world, and the snorkeling time runs about 45 minutes in water where you'll see snappers, groupers, sergeant majors, trigger fish, barracuda and needle fish as standard residents. Sharks, rays and turtles show up often enough that the guide watches for them. You board at Grace Bay Beach and cruise the north coast first, so you get the views and the chance to spot dolphins and seabirds before you ever enter the water.

After the reef, the boat moves to a beach stop where the guide takes you inland on foot to find the rock iguanas: a species found in only two places on earth. The same walk often turns up baby turtles and baby sharks in the shallow lagoon nearby. The exact beach changes based on weather and sea conditions, so it might be Half Moon Bay or Little Water Cay. This is the part where you're moving around on land, not just floating in the water.

The final stop is Sand Dollar Cove sandbar, where the water is shallow enough to stand in. People hunt for shells, take photos, or just float with a drink in hand. Then you cruise back along the coast without stopping, dropping off where you started. Lunch (deli sandwiches and fresh fruit) comes onboard on the way back, along with an open bar of rum punch, local beer, soft drinks and bottled water. All snorkeling equipment is provided, and the pickup and drop-off happen by boat from Grace Bay, though a short walk along the beach may be needed to reach the boarding point depending on which hotel you're staying at.
