The Experience

I didn’t expect the water around Providenciales to look so impossibly blue. I mean, you see photos of Grace Bay and think they’re edited, but then you’re actually there, toes curled over the edge of the boat, and it’s just that color. Our captain—he called himself “Q”—handed out coffee and pastries as we left the dock. The morning was quiet except for the engine’s hum and a few gulls overhead. I tried not to spill my tea when we hit a small wave; Q laughed and said that was my “island baptism.”

First stop: Leeward Reef. I’d snorkeled before but never in water so clear you could count every stripe on a parrotfish. The crew passed out gear (mine smelled faintly of coconut sunscreen) and pointed to where the coral dropped off—honestly, I hesitated for a second. But then you just go under, and it’s all darting silver fish and these soft shifting shadows. Afterward, we cruised up to Half Moon Bay—locals call it Iguana Island—and wandered past sun-warmed rocks where tiny lizards watched us like we were the show. There was this big orange iguana just chilling; one of the guides tried to teach me its name in Creole. I butchered it; everyone laughed.

Lunch was on some deserted stretch—I never caught the name—where the sand squeaked underfoot and someone had already started grilling chicken and fish. Lobster too, since it was in season (I grabbed seconds). There was conch fritters, mac n cheese that tasted like home if your home had salt air in it, garlic bread... It all mixed with the smell of charcoal and seaweed drying nearby. We ate sitting right on towels while someone played soca from their phone speaker. At some point, a kid from another group found a hermit crab and everyone stopped to watch it shuffle along.

Pine Cay Reef was our last snorkel—by then I’d lost track of time except for how salty my hair felt. On the slow ride back to Provo, rum punch appeared like magic (maybe too sweet but who cares), and people danced or just leaned into the wind. Someone shouted when they thought they saw Jojo—the famous dolphin—but maybe it was just wishful thinking. Still, I keep thinking about that light over Grace Bay as we drifted back in; everything soft gold and laughter echoing off the water.
