summary

Summary

From Gallipoli trenches to Cappadocia sunrise this Turkey tour lingers

You’ll start by tracing WWI stories at Gallipoli and Troy before wandering ancient streets in Ephesus and soaking your feet in Pamukkale’s warm pools. In Cappadocia, watch sunrise from a balloon and sleep inside volcanic stone caves. It’s not always comfortable or easy—but every day feels vivid and oddly personal.

You know that feeling when you step off a bus after hours and the air smells different? That’s how it started for me in Gallipoli—salty wind, a bit of eucalyptus maybe. Our guide Cem was already waiting with this half-smile like he’d seen a hundred groups before but still cared. He pointed out the trenches at Anzac Cove, talking about the soldiers who’d sat there over a century ago. I caught myself running my fingers along the rough stone of a memorial—didn’t expect to feel so quiet inside. Lunch in Eceabat was simple: lentil soup and bread, nothing fancy but somehow perfect after all that history.

The next morning at Troy, I tried climbing into the wooden horse (yes, there’s a replica) and nearly slipped—should’ve watched my step. The stones here are old enough to make your knees ache just looking at them. Pergamon felt different—sun beating down as we wandered through ruined libraries and temples. Our guide Ayşe told us stories about Athena’s temple while a stray cat followed us for half an hour. She laughed when I tried to pronounce “Bouleuterion”—I definitely butchered it.

Pamukkale is weirdly bright—almost blinding white under the afternoon sun. We walked barefoot over the travertines; the water was warm but left a chalky film on my feet. Hierapolis’ theater loomed above us and I remember sitting there for a minute, thinking about all the voices that must’ve echoed across those stones. Later in Ephesus, walking past the Library of Celsus with its columns catching late light, I kept picturing what it must’ve looked like full of scrolls and people arguing about philosophy or whatever people argued about back then.

Cappadocia is something else entirely. If you do one thing here (and you can), try the hot air balloon ride—even if you’re scared of heights like me. Watching sunrise from above those fairy chimneys felt unreal; cold air on my face, burners roaring overhead, everyone whispering instead of talking loud. Our guide Elif led us through Kaymakli Underground City later that day—I kept bumping my head on low ceilings (tall people beware). The cave hotel in Göreme was cozy in a way I didn’t expect—stone walls cool against my hand when I woke up early.
