The Experience

The drive from Istanbul takes 5 hours along the Sea of Marmara, with a break around 9 am for refreshments. You'll reach Eceabat by midday, then spend the afternoon walking the Gallipoli battlefields with your guide. The sites tell the story of the ill-fated ANZAC campaign: Brighton Beach where troops landed, Arıburnu Cemetery, the Commemorative Site where ANZAC Day is held each April, Lone Pine, Johnston's Jolly, the original trenches, The Nek and Chunuk Bair. Lunch is served around noon, and you'll overnight in Canakkale, a seaside town on the Dardanelles Strait.

Day 2 begins with a 30-minute drive to Troy. You'll visit the Museum of Troy first to see artifacts excavated from the site, then explore the archaeological layers with your guide, who explains the myths, legends and what archaeologists have uncovered. After lunch, the drive to Pergamon takes 3 hours. The acropolis sits on a hillside terraced with temples, a library that once held 200,000 volumes, a theater carved into the slope with seating for 10,000, and the Altar of Zeus (now in Berlin). Your guide walks you through each structure and its place in Pergamon's history as a major power of the ancient world. The tour ends with time to explore local Turkish handicrafts before drop-off at your hotel in Selcuk or Kusadasi.
