You walk marble streets lined with the Library of Celsus (built in the 2nd century A.D. as a memorial to a Roman proconsul), the Baths of Scholastica, the Temple of Hadrian and the Grand Theatre, which the Romans expanded to hold 24,000 spectators in the 1st century A.D. Your guide interprets each building through its biblical significance rather than as archaeological fact alone.

From Ephesus, you drive to the House of the Virgin Mary on Aladag Mountains, five miles away. The site is venerated because the Third Ecumenical Council declared in 431 A.D. that Mary came to Ephesus with St. John in 37 A.D. and lived there until her death in 48 A.D. Pope Paul VI visited and prayed there in 1967. Lunch is served here: four kinds of Turkish mezes, salad, chicken shish and meatball, and fruit. After, you visit the Basilica of St. John, where the evangelist is believed to have spent his final years and been buried on Ayosolug Hill, then stop at the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The drive back to Kusadasi town center or port leaves time for last-minute shopping if you want it.
