The Experience

We’d barely left the port in Kusadasi when our guide, Cem, started telling stories about Ephesus—honestly, I thought I knew ruins, but this felt different. The air was thick with that early-morning warmth you get near the Aegean. Walking downhill through the old city, past the Bouleuterion and Hercules Gate, I kept running my fingers along the stone. Cem pointed out faded carvings on the Temple of Hadrian—he said they’re still arguing about what some of them mean. The Celcus Library looked almost unreal against the blue sky. There were birds everywhere, and at one point a local woman selling pomegranates called out to us—I almost bought one just for the color.

I didn’t expect to feel so small standing in the Great Theater. Cem let us sit there for a minute; it was quiet except for some distant voices echoing off the marble. After Ephesus, we drove maybe twenty minutes to a Turkish bath—my first time. At the entrance they handed me this thin cotton peştamal and showed me where to lock up my stuff (I checked three times that I had the key). Inside, everything smelled faintly of soap and warm stone. The attendant spoke hardly any English but somehow made me laugh anyway—probably at how awkward I looked trying to wrap myself up.

Lying on hot marble under that domed ceiling, I could hear water splashing from nearby basins and someone humming softly in Turkish. The scrub was rougher than I expected but honestly kind of satisfying—I still think about how clean my skin felt after.
