The Experience

The first thing that happened was our guide, Cem, handed me a tiny sprig of wild thyme he’d picked by the path up to the House of the Virgin Mary. He said locals believe it brings luck—he smiled and shrugged like maybe he half believed it himself. The air was cool but already full of birdsong and the faint smell of stone warmed by sun. I tried to say “thank you” in Turkish (Teşekkürler?), but honestly I think I messed it up—Cem grinned anyway.

Walking through Ephesus with someone who knew every story felt different from just reading signs. We ducked under an archway near the Temple of Hadrian and Cem pointed out a carved Medusa head I’d have missed. There were schoolkids on a field trip nearby, laughing as they tried to echo their voices in the Odeon. The marble underfoot was slick and cold, even though it was nearly midday. At the Terrace Houses, we paused—those mosaics are so sharp and bright after all these centuries, it’s almost unsettling. Cem explained how wealthy Romans lived here; I could almost picture them arguing over dinner or complaining about the heat.

Lunch was at a place just outside Selçuk—nothing fancy, but the bread came out warm and soft enough to tear with your hands. Someone at another table was celebrating something; there was laughter and a bit of singing in Turkish that drifted over while we ate eggplant stew and grilled chicken. Afterward we stopped at the Basilica of St. John—the wind picked up on that hill and you could see all across town, right down to where the Temple of Artemis ruins sit in their patch of grass.

I didn’t expect to feel so much walking those streets—maybe it’s because Cem told stories about daily life instead of just emperors and wars. The day trip to Ephesus from Kusadasi or Izmir is supposed to be about history, but for me it ended up being about small things: thyme between my fingers, cool marble steps, voices echoing off old stone. I still think about that view from the basilica sometimes—you know?
