The experience

You arrive at Izmir airport and a representative meets you with a name sign, then drives you to your hotel. From there, the tour unfolds over five days across the Aegean region, moving through the ancient cities where these churches once stood. The guide is trained in the biblical context of each site (the Revelation passages, the historical circumstances, the archaeology), so the ruins become legible instead of just impressive. Domestic flights move you between regions, and an air-conditioned minivan handles the ground transport. You don't arrange either one.

Day two takes you to Pergamon, where you walk the Acropolis and see the Altar of Zeus (called the Throne of Satan in Revelation), then to Thyatira before returning to Izmir. Day three departs early for Sardis, then Philadelphia (modern Alasehir), then Laodicea (where you see the ancient theater, basilica remains and the Gate of Domitian) before driving to Hierapolis and its white mineral pools cascading down the cliffs at Pamukkale. What are the Seven Churches of Revelation, and will I understand them without a Bible background?

The Seven Churches are congregations named in the Book of Revelation chapters 2 and 3: Smyrna, Pergamon, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea and Ephesus. Your guide is trained specifically in the biblical and historical context of each site, so you'll learn what made each church significant and what the Revelation passages meant in their time. You don't need prior knowledge. The guide builds it as you go.

How much walking is involved each day, and what's the terrain like?

The tour is suitable for all fitness levels. Days include walking through archaeological sites (marble streets at Ephesus, the Acropolis at Pergamon, the theater at Laodicea), but the pace is set by the group and the guide. Pamukkale's white mineral pools involve some climbing, but it's manageable. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water. The Aegean sun is strong in summer.

Are meals included, and can you accommodate dietary needs?

Four breakfasts and two dinners are included at your hotels. Lunch is not included, so you'll eat in the towns you visit. Vegetarian options are available. Let the operator know at booking if you need them. Drinks are not included in the package.

Do I need to book flights separately, or are they part of the tour?

Domestic flights between regions are included in the tour price. The operator arranges them, and your guide will have your flight details. You'll fly from Izmir to connect the different church sites across the five days.

What should I wear when visiting the holy sites?

When visiting churches, monasteries and other places of worship, bare shoulders are not permitted. Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. If you visit any mosques, you'll need to remove your shoes at the entrance.

Is this tour private, or will I be with other travelers?
