The Experience

You know that feeling when you wake up somewhere new and your brain’s still catching up? That was me as we rolled out of Izmir, watching the city fade behind the van windows. The air felt cooler than I expected—sort of sharp, but not cold—and the road to Bergama wound through fields that looked almost gold in the early light. Our guide, Emre, had this easy way of dropping facts between jokes. He pointed out a hilltop and said, “That’s where Pergamon ruled half of Asia Minor.” It sounded big. It was big.

Standing at the Acropolis in Pergamon is stranger than I thought it’d be. The stones are massive—somehow both broken and still proud—and there’s a wind that tugs at your shirt. You can see so far it makes your stomach flip a little. Emre showed us where philosophers would debate (I tried to imagine arguing about medicine or gods here instead of what to have for dinner). There was this moment where I ran my hand over a carved column and it was warm from the sun—felt like history wasn’t so far off after all.

The Asklepion was next, tucked lower down, quieter somehow. They say people came here hoping to heal—Emre called it “the world’s first hospital,” which made me laugh thinking of all the clinics I’ve sat in back home. There’s a tunnel you can walk through; my footsteps echoed weirdly against stone that must’ve heard so many prayers and worries. Afterward we stopped for lunch at this carpet workshop—smelled like wool and strong tea—and I definitely ate too much eggplant stew. Someone tried to show me how to pronounce ‘Bergama’ properly; I’m still not sure I got it right.

The drive back to Izmir felt slower, maybe because everyone was full or just thinking about those old stones under our feet earlier. I keep replaying that view from the top—the wind, the light over Bergama—like something you want to hold onto before real life crowds back in.
