The experience
The tour opens at the Roman Agora of ancient Smyrna, where your guide recounts the martyrdom of St. Polycarp, a disciple of St. John, and connects the city's story to the letter in Revelation 2:8-11. From there you ascend to Pergamon's Acropolis to see the Temple of Trajan and the Altar of Zeus foundation, the place St. John called "where Satan has his throne", then visit the Asklepion, the ancient world's first major psychiatric hospital, to contrast pagan healing practices with early Christian miracles. The day ends at the Red Basilica, a massive temple originally built for Egyptian gods and later converted into a church, a physical symbol of Christianity's triumph over paganism.
Day two takes you through Thyatira, Sardis, and Philadelphia, each with its own biblical warning or promise. At Sardis you walk the ancient marble road past the grand Gymnasium and Synagogue, standing in what Jesus called "the Dead Church" despite its wealth. Philadelphia, the city of Brotherly Love, is the only church that received no rebuke. You visit the remains of the Byzantine Basilica of St. John and reflect on the promise of the "Open Door." Scenic drives through Turkish countryside and vineyards connect the sites, giving you time to discuss what you've seen with your guide. You stay overnight in Pamukkale at a 5-star hotel with breakfast and dinner included.
Day three centers on Hierapolis and the Martyrium of St. Philip, where the apostle was martyred and buried. You walk through the largest necropolis in Anatolia, surrounded by thousands of pagan tombs, and visit the octagonal tomb of Philip itself. A museum housed in the ancient Roman Baths shows statues and sarcophagi from the era. Then comes a leisure stop at Pamukkale's thermal pools. You can swim among submerged Roman columns in warm mineral water (optional, with a separate entrance fee), or rest in the cafeteria. You have free time to walk barefoot on the white travertine terraces. Your final stop is Laodicea, the "Lukewarm Church," where your guide explains the ancient water system that brought hot water from Hierapolis and cold water from Colossae, arriving here lukewarm: the physical reality behind St. John's letter.
Day four is the climax: Ephesus, where St. Paul spent three years preaching. You walk the marble Curetes Street, stand in the Great Theatre where the riot in Acts 19 took place, and see the Celsus Library. The Terrace Houses (roofed excavations of Roman villas with mosaics, frescoes, and private baths) show the wealthy society early Christians lived among (entrance fee separate). You visit the House of the Virgin Mary on Mt. Koressos, a place of absolute peace where tradition says St. John brought Mary after the crucifixion. You see the Temple of Artemis, once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, now reduced to a single standing column: a symbol of paganism's fall. The tour ends at the Basilica of St. John on Ayasuluk Hill, where you stand at the tomb of the apostle who wrote Revelation, overlooking the ancient city. A private transfer then takes you to Izmir airport or your hotel, a 45-60 minute drive through the Aegean landscape.
