The Experience

The day starts before dawn. Your Istanbul hotel pickup happens between 4:15 and 6:30 am depending on your flight time, and you're at Kayseri or Nevsehir airport by mid-morning. A driver meets you on arrival and takes you to meet your guide for the north Cappadocia tour. The first stop is Uchisar Castle, a viewpoint where the guide explains the region's geology and history—the volcanic rock formations that define the landscape. From there you move through Göreme's Open Air Museum, a UNESCO site since 1985 with frescoed Byzantine churches carved directly into the stone, then to Avanos for lunch and a walk along the Kızılırmak (Red River), where pottery workshops still use techniques that trace back to the Hittites. The afternoon takes you to Pasabag, also called Monks Valley, where the mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys rise around you and a monk's cell carved into the rock sits empty. Devrent Valley comes next—locals call it Imagination Valley because the rock formations look like animals. Day two starts after breakfast at 9:45 am. The guide picks you up for the south tour, beginning at Göreme Panorama for photos of the village and its fairy chimneys. Red Valley is a 4-kilometer walk through layered volcanic rock where you'll see pigeon houses, local farms, and cave chapels carved into the cliffs; the hike ends at Cavusin Old Greek Village. Love Valley, one of Cappadocia's most photographed spots, comes next. Lunch is in Göreme village, leaving time to walk around. Then you descend into Kaymakli Underground City, the largest and most visited of over 100underground cities in the region—some built as far back as the Hittite era, later used by early Christians to hide from Arab invasions. The final stop is Pigeon Valley, where rock-carved dovecotes still stand from centuries when pigeon droppings were used as fertilizer and pigeon eggs made the pigment for church frescoes. After the tour, a driver transfers you to the airport for your return flight to Istanbul and then to your hotel.

The group stays under 12 people, which keeps the pace manageable and the guide's attention distributed. Flights include 15 kilograms of checked baggage and 8 kilograms of cabin baggage.
