Kind of a low roar mixed with shouts and laughter from people already out there. Our guide, Cem, handed me a helmet and grinned like he knew what was coming. The air smelled sharp, almost piney, and I could feel the cool spray just standing on the bank. I’d never done anything like this before, honestly felt a little nervous as we squeezed into our life jackets (pro tip: bring water shoes if you can).
Once we pushed off into the rapids, everything else faded out — just water slapping at the raft and Cem yelling instructions over the noise. At one point he pointed up to this old stone bridge arching over us — Roman, apparently 2,000 years old. Wild to think about how many people have crossed it before us. The water here is that weird blue-green you only see in travel photos (except now I know it’s real). We stopped for a swim where it calmed down; freezing but kind of wakes up your whole body.
Lunch came after — simple stuff but tasted better than most fancy places back home (maybe hunger helps). There were families from Antalya and some folks from Alanya too; everyone ended up laughing about who fell in first or who paddled backwards by mistake (guilty). By the end my arms were tired but in that good way. I still think about that bridge sometimes when things get loud at home — how small you feel out there but also sort of connected to everyone else on the river.
