The Experience

I still remember the way my sneakers scraped against the rocky slope—just a couple of awkward steps, and suddenly we were airborne. The pilot, Cem, grinned at my nervous laugh and said something about “flying like seagulls,” which made me look down at the white curve of Cleopatra Beach. It felt unreal, hanging in that blue silence except for the wind in my ears and Cem pointing out the old fortress, his hand steady on the controls. I tried to say “thank you” in Turkish (teşekkürler?)—he smiled politely, so maybe I didn’t butcher it too badly.

The air up there is cooler than I expected, almost sharp. You can smell salt even though you’re hundreds of meters above the water. At one point Cem asked if I wanted to steer—my hands were clammy but I managed a few wobbly turns before giving it back. He laughed and said, “You’re natural!” (I’m pretty sure he was being kind.) The whole flight over Alanya lasted maybe twenty minutes? Time got weird up there. We drifted right over the city’s rooftops and then circled slowly down toward the sand.

Landing was softer than I thought—just a quick run on Cleopatra Beach and we were back on earth. There was a kid selling simit nearby who waved at us; Cem bought one for me after we packed up the chute. If you’d told me that morning that I’d be floating over Alanya with nothing but fabric and wind between me and the sea…well, yeah, I wouldn’t have believed you either.
