Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Roman ruins and water temple

  • Visit water temple and aqueduct source
  • Stop at ancient Roman aqueduct
  • Tour ancient Roman city Thuburbo Majus
  • Explore Roman city Dougga UNESCO site

The experience

If you're staying in Hammamet with a day free and want to see Roman ruins beyond the beach, this tour chains three sites that most visitors miss. You start at Zaghouan, where a temple marks the source of an aqueduct that once carried water to Carthage and across the Roman provinces. The engineering itself is the attraction here, not just the temple. A short stop halfway to Thuburbo Majus shows you the actual aqueduct channel, still visible after two thousand years.

Thuburbo Majus is a working archaeological site, not a polished museum. You walk through the Capitol, the forum, the villa of Neptune, temples to Mercury and other gods, and both the summer and winter bath complexes. The scale of a Roman city becomes real when you're standing in the market square imagining the crowds. From there the tour moves to Dougga, which occupies 65 hectares and is the most complete Roman city remaining in North Africa. The Capitol, the wind rose (a stone compass carved into the pavement), the Libyco-Punic mausoleum, and temples to Minerva and Saturn are all still standing. Dougga's UNESCO listing reflects how much of it survives intact.

The tour runs seven to eight hours total and moves by private vehicle with a guide who speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or two other languages. You choose between a tour for one to two passengers or one to six, and the price covers transport, the guide, air conditioning, and parking at each site. Bring water beyond the one bottle included, wear comfortable walking shoes, and plan to pay entrance fees at each location when you arrive.

What’s included

  • Private air-conditioned vehicle for the full day.
  • professional guide in English, Spanish, Italian, French or two additional languages.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Russian.

What is the water temple at Zaghouan and why does it matter?

The temple at Zaghouan marks the source of a major Roman aqueduct that supplied water to Carthage and other cities across the region. The site shows both the temple structure and the engineering of the aqueduct itself, making it a rare place to see how Romans moved water across long distances.

How much walking is involved at each of the three sites?

Thuburbo Majus and Dougga are both open archaeological sites where you walk between standing ruins: temples, forums, baths, and residential structures. The terrain is uneven in places, and there is no shade at most stops, so comfortable shoes and sun protection are essential. The water temple at Zaghouan involves less walking.

Are entrance fees included in the tour price?

Entrance fees to the archaeological sites are not included and are paid separately at each location. The tour price covers only the guide, transport, and parking.

Can I book this tour for just one or two people, or does it require a larger group?

You can book for one to two passengers on a private vehicle, or for up to six passengers. Either way, the vehicle and guide are yours alone for the day.

What makes Dougga different from the other Roman sites on this tour?

Dougga is the largest and most intact Roman city in North Africa, covering 65 hectares and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It preserves an unusually complete picture of Roman urban life, with temples, markets, baths, and homes still standing and visible.
