A minaret with a backwards clock, two Roman cities, and eight hours to move between centuries

This private day tour from Hammamet visits three sites spanning Moorish and Roman history: Testour, a 17th-century village built by Andalusian settlers whose 23-meter minaret features a mechanical clock with counterclockwise hands; Dougga, a UNESCO-listed Roman city with a theater, forum, capitol and thermal baths; and Bulla Regia, an archaeological site known for its religious structures and remains from the Numidian and Roman periods. The tour includes a live guide in English, Italian, French or Arabic, entrance fees to both archaeological sites, bottled water, and transport in an air-conditioned vehicle. You can book with a guide and all entries included, or without a guide and entrance fees.

  • Explore Dougga theater, forum, and baths
  • See Dougga capitol and mausoleum

The experience

The day starts in Testour, where the Great Mosque and its octagonal minaret dominate the skyline. That minaret (23 meters tall with glazed inscriptions and small double windows) was built in the Andalusian style that echoes the bell towers of southern Spain, and it carries a mechanical clock whose hands move counterclockwise. After a panoramic walk through the village, you'll taste the local cheese specialty before moving on.

Dougga, the ancient Roman city of Thugga, takes up the heart of the day. UNESCO placed it on the World Heritage List in 1997 as the best-preserved small Roman city in North Africa. The site holds the monumental center (capitol, forum, market, and the place of the wind rose) alongside the theater, circus, and public baths that show how an indigenous settlement evolved under Roman rule. The ruins are extensive enough that you can spend hours moving between structures and still find new details.

Bulla Regia, located north of Jendouba, closes the tour. Founded by the Numidians in the 6th century BC and later elevated to a Roman colony under Emperor Hadrian, the site is known for its religious buildings: the capitol, the temple of Apollo, two Christian basilicas, and the church of Alexander. The remains span more than 17 centuries of occupation and shifting power. Your guide will walk you through the layers of history at each stop, and bottled water is provided throughout the eight-hour day.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, French, Italian and Arabic.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What makes Testour's minaret different from other minarets I might see in Tunisia?

Testour's minaret is 23 meters tall with an octagonal shape and Andalusian-style architectural details: small double windows with glazed inscriptions and a mechanical clock at the top whose hands turn counterclockwise, mimicking the bell towers of southern Spain rather than the typical Islamic minaret design.

Is Dougga really the best-preserved Roman city in North Africa?

UNESCO classified Dougga as the best-preserved small Roman city in North Africa when it added the site to the World Heritage List in 1997. The ruins include a complete monumental center, theaters, baths, and houses that show how the city evolved from an indigenous foundation into a full Roman settlement.

What religious buildings will I see at Bulla Regia?

Bulla Regia holds the capitol, the temple of Apollo, two Christian basilicas, and the church of Alexander. The site was founded by the Numidians and later became a Roman colony under Emperor Hadrian, so the religious structures span different periods and faiths.

How long is the drive from Hammamet to these sites?

The full tour runs eight hours from pickup to return, covering Testour, Dougga, and Bulla Regia with stops at each location. The sites are spread across northwestern Tunisia, so travel time between them is built into the day.

Can I book this tour without a guide?

Yes, you can choose the option without a guide and entrance fees at checkout. The private vehicle and air-conditioned transport are included either way, but the guided version adds a live guide in English, Italian, French, or Arabic, plus entry to both archaeological sites and a cheese tasting in Testour.
