Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Tunis, Carthage, and Sidi Boussaid
- Visit archaeological park of Carthage
- See Antonine Baths and Roman Theatre
- Tour Medina of Tunis
- Explore souks and historic sites in Medina
- Enjoy local Tunisian lunch
- Visit Sidi Boussaid and Ennejma Ezzahra Palace
- Explore Sidi Boussaid mosque, bazars, and art galleries
The experience
You start from your hotel or airport and travel by private vehicle to Sidi Bou Said, the whitewashed hilltop village that anchors Tunisia's Mediterranean coast. Spend two to three hours walking the narrow streets lined with art galleries, visiting the Ennejma Ezzahra Palace (a jewel of Arab-Islamic architecture that now houses a museum of Arab Mediterranean music), and exploring the bazaars and the Sidi Bou Said mosque and mausoleum. The village sits above the sea. The streets are steep and narrow, and the pace is yours to set with your guide.
From there, the tour moves to Carthage, the ancient Phoenician city that rivaled Rome. You walk through an archaeological park that holds the Antonine Baths, the Theatre, and the remains of an aqueduct: some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. Your guide traces the stories of Phoenician navigators and their wars with Rome, grounding the stones in the history they carry. This section takes several hours and covers significant ground on foot.
The Medina of Tunis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the final major stop. You enter the Grand Mosque Ezzaitouna, then move through the souks: Souk El-attarine for perfumes, Souk Ech-chaouchiya for traditional wool caps, Souk El Berka for jewels, and Souk El Blat for herbal medicines. You also visit older houses and madrasas (Medressa Souleymenia, Dar Bach Hambah, and the Mausoleum of Sidi Ben Arous), which show how the Medina's residents have lived for centuries. A stop at Panorama Café and La Kasbah (the Government Yard) rounds out the cultural immersion. Lunch, prepared in the local style, happens during the day and is included.
Your guide has at least 13 years of experience and speaks your choice of language. The vehicle is modern, air-conditioned, and equipped for comfort. Pickup and drop-off happen at your chosen location: hotel, airport, or elsewhere in the region. The itinerary is private and can be adjusted to your interests.
