Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Dougga, Bulla Regia, and Testour

  • Visit Dougga Roman ruins
  • Tour Bulla Regia semi-subterranean villas
  • Drive through Testour and see Great Mosque

The experience

Dougga sits on a high ridge overlooking the Tunisian countryside, its stone columns framed against green hills. What sets it apart is its layered history: it was a Numidian stronghold under the ruler Masinissa long before the Romans arrived and built what became their most prominent city in Tunisia. The site's geography (elevated and verdant) gives it a visual presence that most Roman towns lack. You spend time walking through the ruins, taking in both the architectural remains and the landscape that made the location strategically and aesthetically significant.

Bulla Regia, located near Jendouba in northwestern Tunisia, offers something no other Roman city does: complete, preserved villas built partially underground. The semi-subterranean design was a practical response to the region's climate extremes: protection from summer heat and winter cold. You explore two-storey dwellings with one floor sunk below ground level, a feature that survives nowhere else in the Roman world. The villas are superbly preserved, so you can walk through rooms and corridors that show how residents actually lived.

Between the two main sites, the tour passes through Testour, a town with Andalusian architecture and a Great Mosque that stands out visually in the landscape. The full day runs eight hours from pickup at your Tunis or Hammamet hotel. Transport is by air-conditioned private car with a licensed driver. If you select the guided option, your guide speaks one of eight languages and handles entrance fees to both archaeological sites. Lunch is included. If you prefer to explore independently, you can book the car and driver alone.

What’s included

  • private air-conditioned car with licensed driver.
  • licensed tour guide in your choice of eight languages (if selected at checkout).

What makes Dougga different from other Roman ruins?

What are the underground villas at Bulla Regia?

Bulla Regia's villas are two-storey dwellings with one floor built underground, a design unique to this Roman city.
