Includes pickup.★ 4.69 (305)8h 30mUS$ 69View › The first thing I remember is the sound — that sort of half-laugh, half-shout from a group of kids chasing each other near Patong Beach while we waited for our guide. It was already warm, but not sticky yet. Our driver, Mr. Somchai, handed me a bottle of water with a little bow and said something I didn’t quite catch (I think it was about the traffic). The van was blissfully cool inside, which I only realized after stepping out again at Karon Viewpoint — wind in my face, three beaches stretched out below like someone painted them just for us. I tried taking photos but honestly, it doesn’t really fit in a frame.
Wat Chalong came next. There’s this faint scent of incense everywhere and people moving quietly around the shrines — some lighting candles, others just standing with their eyes closed for a minute or two. Our guide, Nok, explained how locals come here before big life events; she pointed out a spot where people leave lotus flowers for luck. I tried to copy her gesture but probably looked awkward (Nok smiled anyway). After that we stopped at a cashew nut factory — not something I’d ever thought about before coming to Phuket. The taste is different when they’re fresh, almost sweet? We sampled way too many and ended up buying bags “for friends,” which didn’t survive the flight home.
Old Phuket Town surprised me most — pastel shopfronts with peeling paint, red lanterns strung across Thalang Road. It’s busy but not rushed; you catch bits of conversation in Thai and Chinese as you walk by little cafés and gold shops. Nok told us stories about the old families who built these houses (I only caught half of it because I got distracted by a cat sleeping on a scooter seat). We wandered for maybe 45 minutes before heading up Nakkerd Hill to see the Big Buddha. The climb is short but steep — there’s construction dust in the air and monks in orange robes passing by quietly. Standing at the top, looking out over all of Phuket with wind tugging at my shirt… I still think about that view sometimes.
