Kayaking Phuket: Hong Island & sea caves with dinner
Paddle into limestone caves lit by bioluminescent plankton, then float lanterns on the bay at night.
This 10-hour kayaking tour departs from Phuket hotels or the airport and takes you by escort boat to Hong Island and Panaka Island in Pha Nga Bay, where you paddle custom kayaks into sea caves and hongs (enclosed lagoons) with a professional guide. The day includes Thai lunch and seafood dinner on board, plus an evening Loy Krathong ceremony where you set illuminated flower lanterns afloat as fireflies and bioluminescent plankton light the water. Hotel transfers, kayak equipment with dry bags, life jackets, national park fees and all meals are included; guides speak English, Russian or Chinese.
The Experience
The day starts with pickup from your Phuket hotel or airport, then heads to Ao Por Pier where you board the escort boat. After a Thai lunch served on board, you move into the kayaks—custom-made SOTAR sea kayaks with dry bags to keep your gear safe—and paddle toward the first island. The hongs are the draw here: enclosed sea caves and lagoons carved into limestone cliffs that you navigate by paddle, moving slowly enough to take in the rock formations and the water around them. A professional guide leads the way through both Hong Island and Panaka Island, pointing out the geography and timing the paddling so you're not rushing.
Between kayaking sessions, there's time to swim in the bay. The escort boat stays nearby, and the rhythm of the day is built around the water and the islands rather than a fixed schedule of stops. You eat a seafood and vegetarian buffet dinner on the return journey, and the tour wraps up after dark with the Loy Krathong ceremony—you make a small flower raft, place an illuminated lantern inside it, and set it afloat on the bay. The bioluminescent plankton in the water glow as the lanterns drift, and fireflies add to the light show. The boat returns to the pier roughly two hours after sunset.
What's included covers the logistics: hotel pickup and drop-off anywhere on Phuket Island or from the airport, the escort boat, kayak equipment and life jackets, national park entry fees, all meals and bottled water, and a guide who speaks English, Russian or Chinese. Travel insurance is also included. The minimum group size is 10 people; if a departure doesn't reach that, the operator will offer you an alternative date, a different tour, or a full refund.

What are the hongs in Pha Nga Bay that we'll kayak through?
Hongs are enclosed sea caves and lagoons carved into the limestone cliffs around Hong Island and Panaka Island. You paddle into them by kayak, moving through narrow openings into sheltered pools surrounded by rock walls—they're the signature landscape of Pha Nga Bay and the main reason to kayak this area.
Do I need kayaking experience to join this tour?
No. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and the guide leads the paddling at a pace that works for the group. The kayaks are stable and designed for this water, and you'll have a life jacket on board.
What happens during the Loy Krathong ceremony at the end?
You make a small flower raft, place an illuminated lantern inside it, and set it afloat on the bay as part of a spiritual tradition. The bioluminescent plankton in the water glow as the lanterns drift, and fireflies light up the bay—guests describe it as the highlight of the day.
Is hotel pickup really included from anywhere on Phuket?
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included from any hotel on Phuket Island or from Phuket Airport, so you don't need to arrange transport to the pier.
What meals are provided during the 10-hour tour?
Thai lunch is served on board after you arrive at the pier, and a seafood and vegetarian buffet dinner is served on the return journey. Bottled water and herbal tea are also included throughout the day.
What's the minimum group size for this tour to run?
The tour requires a minimum of 10 people to depart. If a date doesn't reach that number, the operator will offer you an alternative date, a different tour, or a full refund in advance.
