The experience
The day starts with hotel pickup and a drive to the pier, then a traditional longtail boat carries you into Phang Nga Bay. The limestone monoliths rising from emerald water are the bay's signature: James Bond Island (Koh Tapu) is the most famous, a 20-metre islet that appeared in "The Man with the Golden Gun." You'll cruise past it and other karst towers before reaching Hong Island, where you trade the boat for a canoe and paddle into the lagoon surrounded by cliff walls, exploring the narrow passages and hidden coves on your own paddle.
A stop at Koh Panyi, a fishing village built on stilts by Malay families, lets you walk through the community and eat lunch at a local restaurant. Later, you visit Wat Tham Suwanakhuha, an ancient temple carved into a mountainside with multiple caves (some named Tham Yai and Tham Chaeng) that Thai royalty visited in centuries past. The tour wraps with the boat ride back and hotel drop-off, covering roughly eight to nine hours door-to-door.
Your guide speaks English and travels with you throughout. Life jackets, safety equipment, drinking water and a first aid kit are provided. The national park entrance fee (300 baht for adults, 150 baht for children) is paid separately on arrival.
Is this one for you?Hotel pickup means you don't need a car or a ride to the pier. The tour collects you and returns you at the end of the day, which works whether you're staying in Khao Lak or elsewhere on the coast without transport. The canoe portion is suitable for all fitness levels, so paddling experience isn't required.
