Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Krabi Four Islands by boat

  • Board Thai long-tail boat
  • Visit Koh Poda beach and swim
  • Explore Tup Island and snorkel
  • Visit Chicken Island landmark
  • Relax at Railay Beach
  • Visit Phra Nang cave and beach
  • Return to Ao Nang Beach

The experience

Chicken Island gets its name from a rock formation that juts from the water like a bird's head and neck. The cliffs behind it rise sheer and green. Poda Island spreads a long white beach toward the east where you can rest under palms and swim in turquoise water. Tup Island is smaller but sits in waters thick with tropical fish, making it the snorkeling stop. The real draw is Talay Waek, the sandbar that connects Tup, Mor and Chicken islands during low tide. You walk across the seabed between them, a stretch of sand where the sea parts.

Railay Beach sits on the Railay peninsula, cut off from the mainland by limestone cliffs and jungle, so the only way in or out is by boat. It feels like an island even though it is not. Phra Nang Beach is part of the same peninsula and holds a cave where local fishermen and boatmen leave offerings of incense and flowers to the Princess Goddess believed to live inside, a practice that has held for centuries. The tour ends as the sun meets the ocean and you return to Ao Nang Beach.

You travel in a typical Thai long-tail boat with a driver who knows the tides and the islands. The five hours includes travel time between stops, so the actual time at each island varies. Bring a raincoat if you are going during the rainy season. Tropical showers are usually brief and the tour runs rain or shine. The boat will not go out if the driver judges the open sea unsafe.

What’s included

  • Long-tail boat with driver.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 11 years); Infant (under 2): free.

What is Talay Waek and when can I walk it?

Talay Waek, or "separated sea," is a sandbar that connects Tup Island, Mor Island and Chicken Island. During low tide the seabed between them becomes walkable, letting you cross from one island to another on foot. The timing depends on the day's tides, so your boat driver will know when it is passable.

Can I snorkel on this tour?

Yes. Tup Island has an excellent snorkeling spot surrounded by waters full of tropical fish. The tour includes time in the water there, though snorkeling gear is not mentioned in the inclusions, so confirm whether you need to bring your own or if it is available on the boat.

What is Phra Nang Cave and why do fishermen leave offerings there?

Phra Nang Cave sits on Phra Nang Beach, part of the Railay peninsula. Local tradition holds that a Princess Goddess resides in the cave, and fishermen and boatmen have left offerings of incense and flowers there for centuries, believing the practice ensures safe travel and good luck in their catch. The cave is a sacred place and visitors are expected to treat it with respect.

Why is Chicken Island called by that name?

Chicken Island, also known as Koh Gai, gets its name from a large rock formation that resembles a chicken's head and neck. The island has sheer cliffs covered in vegetation on one side and a beautiful beach on the other.

How long is the tour and what time does it end?

The tour runs five hours total, including travel time between islands. It ends at sunset when you return to Ao Nang Beach, so the exact finish time shifts with the season.
