Your First Breath Underwater: Koh Tao Scuba at Koh Nang Yuan

You arrive at 8:30am for a 30–40 minute briefing on scuba basics and equipment, then boat out to Koh Nang Yuan around 11:20am for your first dive in shallow, clear water. The program includes one dive with the option to add a second; you'll see coral, tropical fish, and possibly sea turtles. You leave with an SSI card valid for six months and all gear, insurance, and refreshments included.

8h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Attend introductory briefing
  • Take a short break
  • Depart by boat to dive site
  • Gear up and receive instructions
  • Enjoy first scuba dive

The Experience

The boat cuts through turquoise water so clear you can see the reef dropping below before you even jump in. You're standing on the deck in a wetsuit that still feels strange, listening to your instructor run through the hand signals one more time, and then it's happening — you're descending into blue nothing, and the first breath underwater tastes like metal and salt and something you've never felt before. That's the moment most people remember. At DPM Diving on Koh Tao, they keep groups small enough that your instructor isn't rushing through a checklist; they're watching you, reading your face, making sure that first breath lands right.

The day starts at 8:30am with a briefing that covers the equipment, the basics of pressure and buoyancy, and what to expect once you're down. It's not rushed — they give you time to ask questions and get comfortable with the gear before you head to the boat. Around 11:20am you leave the pier for Koh Nang Yuan, the famous island just offshore, where the water stays shallow enough for beginners and the coral is close enough to see without squinting. The basic program includes one dive, though you can add a second one if you want more time underwater; most people who do say the second dive feels less like learning and more like actually being there. You'll see clownfish darting through anemones, maybe a sea turtle gliding past, pufferfish that puff when they're nervous, and the kind of coral formations that don't photograph the same way they look in person.

When you surface, you get an SSI Recognition Card that lets you dive again for the next six months without repeating the course — which means if Koh Tao hooks you, you can come back and go deeper. The whole thing includes the equipment, the insurance, water, coffee or tea between dives, and an instructor who actually cares whether you're having fun or just going through the motions. No experience needed, just the willingness to try something that feels impossible until you're actually doing it.

Top questions

Do I need any diving experience to join?
No. The course is designed for complete beginners. The instructor covers everything step by step before you enter the water.
What time does the boat leave for the dive site?
Around 11:20am, after the briefing and a short break. The briefing starts at 8:30am (or 9:30am if you're in the Spanish-language group).
Can I do two dives instead of one?
Yes. The basic program includes one dive, but you can add a second dive to spend more time underwater and explore further.
What marine life might I see?
Clownfish, sea turtles, lionfish, pufferfish, colorful reef fish, and coral formations. What you encounter depends on the day and the dive site conditions.
What does the SSI Recognition Card allow me to do?
It certifies you as a basic diver and lets you dive again for the next six months without repeating the Discover Scuba course, as long as you dive with a professional.
Is the water cold?
Koh Tao's waters are warm year-round. A wetsuit is provided as part of your equipment to protect your skin and maintain comfort underwater.
What's included in the price?
All scuba equipment, the SSI Recognition Card, diving insurance, bottled water, and coffee or tea. You don't need to bring or rent anything separately.
How long is the whole experience?
From briefing to return, plan for most of the day. The briefing is 30–40 minutes, then travel to the site and the dive itself, plus time to rest between dives if you add a second one.
