The Experience

The moment you realize you're actually breathing underwater is the moment everything changes. You're standing in a shallow bay off Koh Tao, salt water around your shoulders, a regulator in your mouth, and your lungs are working exactly as they should — except you're thirty feet down. That's the thing nobody tells you about a try dive: the fear dissolves the second it works.

The day starts at 10am at the dive school on the island, where the instructors size you up with brand new equipment and walk you through the basics without making you feel rushed. An hour of briefing covers the do's and don'ts, what to expect, how to equalize pressure in your ears, how to signal if something feels wrong. Then you're on the boat — a three-story vessel with showers, a sun deck, and enough space that you don't feel crammed in with strangers. Water, coffee, tea, fresh fruit and cookies are waiting. The boat ride to the dive site is short, maybe ten minutes, and the bay they choose for beginners is calm and clear.

You start in shallow water, running through simple skills — clearing your mask, recovering your regulator, moving slowly and deliberately. Your instructor stays close, watching your breathing, your hand signals, your comfort level. After you've settled in, you descend together to a maximum depth of 12 meters. The corals come into focus. Fish you've only seen in photos move past your mask. The light filters down from above. You're not thinking about technique anymore; you're just there, suspended in it, watching.

The whole experience wraps up around 4:30pm back at the shop, where you'll finish the paperwork. If you want to dive again the same day — and most people do — the instructors will take you to a different spot at the same price. The boat, the guide, the equipment, snacks and drinks: it's all included, so there's nothing else to arrange or pay for once you're in the water.
