Snorkeling Koh Tao: Morning reefs before the crowds
Plunge into four bays in a single morning, then eat Thai lunch while the boat heads back
A 4-hour snorkeling adventure around Koh Tao departing early from Mae Haad Pier, visiting Tao Thong Bay, Freedom Bay, Ao Leuk and Shark Bay with a live English-speaking guide, hotel pickup, snorkeling gear and lunch included. The morning timing means you reach the reefs before other boats arrive, and the group stays small enough that you're not jostling for space underwater.
Step-by-step itinerary
Morning snorkeling adventure around Koh Tao
- Hotel pickup and transfer to pier
- Boat departs Mae Haad Pier to Tao Thong Bay
- Snorkel at Tao Thong Bay coral gardens
- Snorkel at Freedom Bay
- Swim and snorkel at Ao Leuk Bay
- Snorkel at Shark Bay
- Enjoy Thai lunch onboard returning to pier
The Experience
Hotel pickup starts the morning, and you're at the pier in time to board before sunrise. The boat leaves Mae Haad Pier as light breaks across the water, heading straight to Tao Thong Bay where the coral gardens are densest and the fish schools haven't scattered yet. You drop in with your mask and fins — the guide is in the water with you, pointing out the layout and staying close — and you spend the first stretch swimming through the shallows where the color is sharpest and the marine life is thickest.
From there the boat moves to Freedom Bay, another sheltered snorkeling site, then Ao Leuk where the water stays shallow and the schools of fish are used to swimmers. Shark Bay is the final stop, the one most visitors come for, and you reach it while the morning is still young. Between each site you're cruising, not sitting in traffic, and the boat carries drinking water, coffee, tea and fresh fruit so you can rinse off salt and rehydrate without leaving the deck.
Lunch is a Thai meal served onboard as you cruise back toward the pier — the box includes a vegetarian option if you need it — and you're back at your hotel by early afternoon. The guide speaks English throughout, and a life jacket is provided and recommended for the boat ride and the water. Basic accident insurance, a first-aid kit and a beach towel are all included; bring sunscreen, a dry bag for your camera, and water shoes or flip-flops for getting on and off the boat where there may be shells or rocks on the sand.

Is this one for you?The guide speaks English throughout, so you follow the commentary and safety instructions without translation. The early departure means you're snorkeling while most of Koh Tao is still asleep, which is what keeps the group small and the reefs uncrowded.

What's the water like at Tao Thong Bay and Freedom Bay when we get there?
Both bays have shallow coral gardens with clear water and dense schools of fish. Tao Thong Bay is known for its vibrant coral, and Freedom Bay offers the same kind of snorkeling in a more secluded setting. You're there in the early morning before other tour boats, so the marine life hasn't been disturbed yet.
Is the guide in the water with us the whole time?
Yes, the professional English-speaking guide snorkels with the group and stays close to show you where to look and what to watch for. The group is kept small and intimate, so the guide can keep an eye on everyone.
What happens if I don't have my own snorkeling gear?
Snorkeling equipment is provided — mask, fins and snorkel — along with a life jacket and beach towel. You just need to bring swimwear and sunscreen.
How long do we actually spend in the water across the four bays?
The whole adventure is 4 hours from hotel pickup to return, with snorkeling time spread across Tao Thong Bay, Freedom Bay, Ao Leuk and Shark Bay. The boat moves between sites while you rest and eat, so you're not in the water continuously but you're in the water at each of the four stops.
Does the lunch onboard work for dietary restrictions?
The lunch box includes a vegetarian choice, so vegetarians are covered. If you have other restrictions, it's worth checking with the operator before booking.
What should I wear getting on and off the boat?
Water shoes or flip-flops are recommended because the sand and shallow entry may have shells or rocks. Shorts dry faster than pants and give you more freedom of movement, especially if the water level comes above your knees when you're stepping on or off.
