Whitewater Rafting Chiang Mai: Class III & IV Rapids
The middle section is Thailand's best white water, packed with continuous rapids.
Whitewater rafting in Chiang Mai on a 10km river with three distinct sections of class III and IV rapids, expert guides, and all safety gear included. You paddle yourself under instruction, with hotel pickup and drop-off in Chiang Mai city, lunch, and shower facilities at base camp. Children from age 7 are welcome; younger children or nervous adults can take the van around the hardest section instead.
The Experience
The day starts with a 1.5-hour drive from your hotel in an air-conditioned minivan, arriving at the camp by early afternoon for orientation and a safety briefing. You'll get fitted with a CE-approved helmet and US Coast Guard-approved life jacket, then eat lunch before pushing onto the water. The actual paddling lasts around three hours depending on river level—roughly 2 hours 45 minutes in low water, closer to 2 hours when the river runs high—but the three sections of the river give you very different things to do.
The first section is a warm-up: one class III rapid with jungle shade and a chance to find your rhythm. The middle section is where the reputation comes from—action-packed class III and IV rapids that are known as Thailand's best white water. You're paddling continuously here, working with your guide and the other people in your raft. The final section lets you recover a bit before a strong class III rapid and a run of continuous smaller rapids that bring you back to base camp. Your guide handles the route and calls the strokes; you do the work.
After you come off the water, you shower at the camp, change into the dry clothes you brought, and ride back to your hotel in Chiang Mai by 7pm. Bottled water and tea or coffee are included throughout the day. If you're traveling with children under 15 or if you want to skip the hardest rapids, there's a road alongside the entire difficult section—you can take the van around it instead and rejoin the group downstream.

Is this one for you? You're paddling the whole time, not watching a guide do it—this suits anyone who wants to be active on the water rather than a passenger. The shared raft and fixed schedule mean you're going with other people and the day is planned around the river's conditions, not built to your pace, so it works best if you're comfortable in a group and ready to follow the guide's calls.

What are class III and IV rapids like if I've never rafted before?
Class III rapids have moderate waves and require active paddling but are manageable with instruction; class IV rapids are bigger and more technical, with larger waves and stronger currents. Your guide teaches paddling technique before you start and stays in control of the raft, calling the strokes. The first section is gentler, so you build confidence before hitting the action-packed middle section.
How long do I actually spend on the water?
The white water rafting experience lasts around three hours total, though actual time paddling varies with river level—roughly 2 hours 45 minutes in low water and about 2 hours when the river runs high. The timing depends on how fast the current is moving you downstream.
What happens if I'm not comfortable with the hardest rapids?
Children under 15 and adults who prefer to skip the difficult section can take the van around it instead. There's a road alongside the entire hard section, so you can rejoin the group downstream and paddle the rest of the river with everyone else.
Is hotel pickup included, and does it cover everywhere in Chiang Mai?
Hotel pickup and drop-off within Chiang Mai city limits are included in an air-conditioned minivan. Pickup outside the city can be arranged for an additional fee.
What should I bring and what's provided?
The outfitter provides helmet, life jacket, lunch, towel, shower facilities, and lockers. Bring a second set of dry clothes for the ride home, a copy or photo of your passport on your phone for registration, and anything else you'd normally wear on the water. Vegetarian lunch options are available.
Do I need to be fit to do this?
You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness to paddle class III and IV rapids for three hours. The guide teaches technique and controls the raft, but you're doing the paddling work throughout the day.
