Step-by-step itinerary
Spice farm visit and Stone Town tour
- Visit real spice farm
- Join traditional cooking class
- Enjoy local lunch
- Tour Stone Town and sultanates
The experience
If you've landed in Zanzibar with a free afternoon or a morning to spare, this combines the two things most visitors want to do (eat well and understand the place), in a single eight-hour day. You start at a working spice farm where you handle the actual spices grown there: see them, smell them, taste them at their freshest. The cooking class that follows is not a demonstration you watch from a stool. You're in the kitchen making pilau, ndizi mbivu (ripe plantains), and mchuzi wa pweza (octopus curry) under instruction, learning not just the steps but the stories tied to each dish and why Zanzibari cooks build flavors the way they do.
After lunch (the food you've cooked), the day shifts to the island's history. Your guide takes you through Stone Town's narrow streets to the three sultanate forts, then inland to the Darajan spice market and Forodhani, where you see how the spices you handled that morning move through the island's trade. Private transportation picks you up from your hotel and returns you there, so you don't navigate between sites on your own. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one additional language, and children from age one are welcome.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (11 to 24 years); Child (4 to 10 years); Infant (1 to 3 years): free.
What spices will I actually see and handle at the farm?
The spice farm grows Zanzibar's main crops (clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom and others), and you see, smell and taste them fresh before the cooking class begins. The farm is a working operation, not a tourist display.
Do I need cooking experience to join the class?
No. The class teaches you how to make three traditional Zanzibari dishes from the start, and your guide walks you through each step. The instruction covers both technique and the stories behind the food.
What happens after lunch? Is it more sightseeing or more food?
After you eat lunch, the day shifts to a guided tour of Stone Town's sultanate forts, the Darajan spice market and Forodhani. You're exploring the island's history and trade heritage, not visiting more food sites.
Does the tour include transportation between the spice farm, Stone Town and the markets?
Yes. Private transportation is included for the entire day, with pickup from your hotel and return at the end. You don't arrange separate rides between stops.
