The experience

You don't expect the wooden boat to actually have a steam engine until you're standing on the dock and your guide points it out: a real working thing, not a replica. That's the first surprise of the day. The 30-minute crossing to Prison Island (Changuu) gives you time to settle in while your guide walks you through what you're about to see: the historical buildings that used to hold prisoners, then served as a chapel, then became a refuge for enslaved people after abolition. The island's past is layered and heavy, but the present moment is lighter: giant tortoises move across the white sand like they own the place, which they do, and you can stand next to them, photograph them, watch them eat. They've been here longer than the buildings.

After Prison Island, the boat heads to Nakupenda Beach, a sandbank that shifts with the tide and feels like it shouldn't exist: too perfect, too shallow, too quiet. You snorkel in water so clear you can see your own feet, and the reef isn't crowded or picked over. Lunch arrives mid-afternoon: Swahili food, fresh and simple, eaten on the sand while birds pass overhead.
