The experience
The day starts in Stone Town with your guide pointing out the buildings that shaped Zanzibar's history: the Darajani Market, the Former Slave Market, the House of Wonders. You move through the old town on foot, learning how the city became the icon of East Africa. After Stone Town, a local boat takes about 25 minutes to reach Prison Island (Changuu Island), sitting just off the coast to the west.
On Prison Island, you walk the grounds to see the giant tortoises, some over 200 years old, that arrived in 1919 as a gift for the sultan and his wife. The island also holds the old prison built between 1893 and 1894, never actually used as one. If you want to swim, the island has a beach. The boat ride back to Stone Town takes the same 25 minutes.
The afternoon is a 3-hour guided walk through villages and spice plantations, starting at the Palace and heading toward Kidichi. Along the way you see how cloves, nutmeg and other spices grow, and you reach the Persian Baths: built by Seyyid Said Sultan for his wife Princess Shehrzard, a member of the Shah of Persia's family. Private transportation, bottled water and all fees are included. Your guide is a licensed local who speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and three other languages.
