The Experience

Most people come to Zanzibar for the sand and the spice markets. You wake up there, but by mid-morning you're on a small aircraft heading inland to Selous Game Reserve — a shift that still feels surreal once the wheels touch down on the dirt strip. The reserve sprawls across more than 54,600 square kilometers of rolling savannah, lakes, rivers and deltas, and the moment you step into the open-sided game vehicle, you understand why the elephants are here. There are more of them in this one place than anywhere else on earth, and they move through the landscape like it belongs to them — which it does.

The game drive itself is the whole day. You're out there watching for movement in the grass, listening to the engine cut and the guide point out a pride of lions resting in the shade, or a pod of hippos anchored in a river bend. Cape buffalo graze in loose herds. Crocodiles sun themselves on the banks. And then there are the wild dogs — lean, alert, moving with purpose — and the guide explains that Selous is one of the few places left where you can actually see them hunting in the wild, not in a zoo or a reserve where they're managed. The landscape doesn't feel curated. It feels like you're passing through something that existed long before tourism found it.

The day is long, and the drive is part of that — you're out from early morning until late afternoon, with coffee and tea at the start, lunch somewhere in the middle (usually at a rest point with a view), and bottled water whenever you need it. The flight back to Zanzibar leaves you back on the island by evening, which means you've crossed from one world to another and back in a single day. It's the kind of thing that sounds impossible until you do it.

What’s included

Your day includes round-trip flight from Zanzibar to Selous, all park fees and taxes, a full-day open-vehicle game drive with a guide, coffee and tea at the start, a packed lunch during the drive, bottled water throughout, and ground transfers to and from the airstrip.

Top questions

How long is the full day, including flights?

You leave Zanzibar early morning and return by evening. The flight is roughly 45 minutes each way; the game drive itself runs most of the daylight hours.

What animals will I definitely see?

Elephants are the main draw — Selous has the world's largest concentration. Lions, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles and wild dogs are common. Sightings depend on the day and where the animals are, so nothing is guaranteed, but the reserve is active year-round.

Is the game drive bumpy or uncomfortable?

The vehicle is open-sided for viewing, and the terrain is natural savannah — expect a rough ride. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health. You should have at least moderate fitness.

What's included in the price?

Round-trip flight from Zanzibar, park entry fees, the game drive with a guide, coffee and tea, lunch, and bottled water. Ground transfers are included.

Can I do this if I'm short on time?

Yes — it's designed as a day trip from Zanzibar, so you don't need to stay overnight in the reserve. You're back on the island by evening.

What should I bring?

Sun protection, binoculars, a camera, and neutral-colored clothing (bright colors can startle animals). The guide will advise on what to wear for the season.
