Ever wondered what it’s like to leave the ocean behind in Zanzibar and end up watching elephants by a river hours later? That’s pretty much how our Selous safari started. We got picked up right at our hotel (I was still half-asleep), then zipped over to the ferry—bags packed, sunscreen forgotten, typical. The crossing to Dar es Salaam was noisy but kind of fun if you like people-watching. Our guide, Juma, met us with this huge grin and immediately started telling stories about the park—he’d been coming here since he was a kid. I liked that. It made the long drive south feel less like a transfer and more like we were already on safari.

The first real “wow” moment hit during the boat ride on the Rufiji River that afternoon. There’s this warm, muddy smell coming off the banks and suddenly—hippos everywhere. Crocodiles too, just floating along like logs. Juma pointed out some crazy-bright birds I’d never seen before (he rattled off names I forgot instantly). Lunch was simple but honestly tasted better than anything fancy because we ate it outside with all those sounds—water slapping against the boat, far-off grunts from hippos. I didn’t expect to feel so small out there.

The next day was all about driving dusty tracks through Selous (or Nyerere—I kept mixing up the names), windows down so you could actually smell the dry grass. We saw buffaloes moving in these slow herds and lions sprawled under trees like they owned everything (they kind of do). There was this moment when we stopped for lunch at a picnic spot—just us and miles of nothing but bush and sky. No fences anywhere. It felt weirdly peaceful.

Our last morning started early with a walking safari—honestly, I was nervous at first but our ranger had this calm way of talking that made me trust him right away. The air smelled different before sunrise, cooler and sharp somehow. We followed animal tracks in soft dirt; he showed us which ones belonged to giraffes or wild dogs (I still can’t tell them apart). Heading back for breakfast after that walk felt almost surreal—like we’d stepped into someone else’s world for a bit, then slipped quietly back into ours. Still think about that silence sometimes.
