“You ever try steering a quad bike with one hand while the other’s clutching a coconut? I wouldn’t recommend it, but our guide Musa just laughed and handed me another straw. We’d started out near Nungwi, engines rumbling over the red dust: honestly, I was nervous at first (I’m not exactly known for my coordination). But after the first stretch, something about the salty air and the wild green of those giant baobab trees made me forget I was even driving. There’s this spot where you can smell the ocean before you see it (like wet rope and salt), and then suddenly Jomba Beach just opens up in front of you.”

We stopped in Kidoti village where kids ran alongside us, waving. Musa pointed out how they dry octopus on wooden racks. He said it’s a local thing, but I still don’t know if I could eat it.
