The experience
You start early in the morning with pickup from your Moshi accommodation. The drive takes you through African bushland, past dried-up river beds, baobab and acacia trees, and sugar cane plantations on the way to Kambi ya Chooka. Unlike many Maasai villages built for tourists, this one is a working community founded by local Maasai families. Your English-speaking guide meets you there and translates as you walk through the village, learning about traditional medicine, visiting a Maasai home, and tasting local chai tea with the residents. You'll also join in dancing with the community.
In the early afternoon, you leave the village and head to Kikuletwa Hot Springs near Rundugai. The springs sit in a hidden pocket of Tanzania surrounded by fig and palm trees with winding roots. The water itself is crystal clear and turquoise, fed by a source high on Kilimanjaro. Despite the name, the water is cool and refreshing rather than hot, perfect for swimming after the morning's activities. After your swim, you'll have a picnic lunch by the springs before the return drive to Moshi in the late afternoon.
