Walk inside ancient stone where sunlight breaks through the ceiling

A guided tour of Kiwengwa Caves in Zanzibar combines underground exploration with a forest walk through the only remaining high coral rag forest in the north. You navigate stalagmites and stalactites by flashlight, spot naturally formed ceiling holes that let daylight in, and afterward walk the Kiwengwa–Pongwe Forest Reserve where red Columbus monkeys, duikers and 47 bird species live. The tour runs about four hours and includes hotel pickup. Guides speak English, Spanish, Italian, French and two additional languages.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Kiwengwa Caves and Forest Reserve

  • Travel north from hotel
  • Visit Kiwengwa Caves with flashlights
  • Observe stalagmites and stalactites
  • See roots connecting cave ceiling and floor
  • Take guided tour in Kiwengwa, Pongwe Forest Reserve
  • Spot red Columbus monkeys and duikers
  • Watch for endemic birds and butterflies

The experience

The caves themselves are a recent opening to the public, though locals have visited them for centuries to worship ancestors and leave offerings at the holy stones. The formations (stalagmites rising from the floor and stalactites hanging from above) were built slowly as water dissolved calcium carbonate from the coral stone. You'll need a flashlight to move through the deeper passages, but the caves are pierced by naturally formed holes in the ceiling that let sunlight stream in, so you're never in complete darkness. One striking detail: tree roots have pushed down through the rock and hang like electric wires from ceiling to floor.

After the caves, the guide leads you into the Kiwengwa–Pongwe Forest Reserve, the only patch of high coral rag forest left in northern Zanzibar. The walk is where you might see red Columbus monkeys, small duikers and mini antelope moving through the trees. Bird watchers find 47 species here, and the forest floor hosts many butterflies. The pace is unhurried and the guide points out what lives in each section.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Polish.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (7 to 14 years); Infant (under 7): free.

What exactly are the stalactites and stalagmites made of in Kiwengwa Caves?

The formations are calcium carbonate that built up over time as water dissolved it from the coral stone and left it behind, layer by layer, creating the hanging stalactites and floor-rising stalagmites you see today.

Do I need to bring my own flashlight, or is one provided?

The tour description specifies that flashlights are necessary to explore the deeper passages, though the caves have natural ceiling holes that let sunlight in. Confirm with the operator whether a light is provided or if you need to bring one.

What animals might I see during the forest walk after the caves?

The Kiwengwa–Pongwe Forest Reserve is home to red Columbus monkeys, duikers (a type of small antelope), mini antelope, 47 bird species and many butterflies. Sightings depend on the time of day and season.

How far north of the hotel are the caves?

The caves are a short journey north from your hotel. The operator includes pickup from your accommodation, so you don't arrange transport yourself.
