The experience

The day begins early with your guide, a Hadzabe hunter himself, leading you into the bush to meet a resident group of the Hadzabe people. These are the only hunter-gatherers left in the East African region, and they speak a click-based language that sounds nothing like Swahili or English. Your guide teaches you the practical skills his community has used for generations: how to track wildlife across open ground, how to make fire without matches, how to locate and extract honey from bee nests without getting stung. He then introduces you to his family and explains the customs and seasonal movements that shape their way of life: how they follow the animals rather than staying in one place year-round.

In the afternoon, the tour shifts to the Maasai market, which fills with hundreds of vendors and visitors every Thursday. You'll have time to photograph the crafts on display, taste Maasai food including their famous BBQ, and move through the market at your own pace. A larger village-wide market happens on the 22nd of each month if your dates align. The drive back to Arusha happens in the late afternoon, ending the day where it started.

Is this one for you?The morning walk with the Hadzabe requires a reasonable level of mobility (you'll be on foot in the bush for several hours), so it suits travelers who are comfortable walking at a moderate pace and want direct contact with a community rather than viewing from a distance.
