experience

What’s the experience like?

We kicked off our trip just after breakfast, piling into the jeep as the morning air still felt cool. Lake Manyara National Park was our first stop—a place I’d only seen in documentaries before. The lake itself shimmered under the sun, and you could hear the calls of water birds echoing across the water. Our guide, Joseph, pointed out a group of flamingos wading in the shallows—honestly, I’d never seen so many at once. We drove slowly through patches of forest where blue monkeys darted between branches and giraffes grazed quietly nearby. Around midday, we spotted a few lions sprawled out on acacia branches—something you don’t see every day. By late afternoon, dust clung to our boots as we made our way to Eileens Trees Inn for the night.

The next morning started with strong coffee and a drive through rolling highlands dotted with maize fields and coffee farms. The road took us past Ngorongoro’s rim—clouds hanging low over the crater—before we finally reached Serengeti’s endless plains around noon. The landscape changed fast: one minute it was open grassland, then suddenly rocky kopjes popped up like islands. Wildebeest herds stretched as far as I could see; some even had calves trailing behind them. Joseph explained how unpredictable the migration can be—sometimes you catch it right in front of you, sometimes not—but we lucked out with plenty of action that day. We spent the night at Tukaone Camps, swapping stories by lantern light.

Dawn in Serengeti is something else—the air feels sharp and everything’s quiet except for distant grunts from wildebeest. We set out early for a game drive; within minutes we saw zebras mingling with buffalo while a pair of cheetahs lounged under a thorn tree. After breakfast back at camp (eggs cooked over charcoal—tasted better than any hotel buffet), we packed up and headed towards Ngorongoro Conservation Area. There’s this moment when you reach the crater rim: wind picks up, and suddenly you’re looking down into this massive green bowl filled with animals moving like tiny dots below.

Our last day started before sunrise again—Ngorongoro Crater doesn’t wait for anyone. The descent into the crater is steep; windows fogged up from everyone’s breath as we wound down through thick forest that soon gave way to open savannah. In just a few hours we ticked off lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and even caught a glimpse of a leopard lounging on a branch (Joseph spotted it first). Hippos snorted in muddy pools while warthogs trotted by like they owned the place. After lunch from packed boxes (the mango juice was surprisingly good), we made our way back to Arusha as afternoon storms gathered over the hills.
