The experience

You arrive in Zanzibar with two days to spend, and this tour threads together the island's inland and coastal sides without the logistics of arranging separate transport or guides. Day one starts with the spice plantations. You walk through working farms, learn how cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon grow there, and taste them fresh. From there you move to Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, where a guided walk through the forest puts you face-to-face with red colobus monkeys and the dense plant life they depend on. The afternoon swings to Kuza Cave near Jambiani, an underground chamber with a natural swimming pool, then to the Rock Restaurant in Michamvi: a dining spot built on a rock formation in the ocean where you eat while the Indian Ocean surrounds you. The day ends at Paje Beach, where the sand is white and the water stays shallow enough for swimming or, if you want it, kiteboarding and snorkeling.

Day two centers on Mnemba Island and Stonetown. You boat out to Mnemba, a private island off the coast known for its coral reefs and the marine life that moves through them: dolphins, rays, and the fish that make snorkeling here different from a beach. The snorkeling gear is provided. Back on the main island, a private walking tour of Stonetown takes you through the narrow streets where African, Arab, Indian and European architecture sits side by side. You see the House of Wonders and the Old Fort, and you walk through Darajani Market, where vendors sell spices, produce and handmade goods. Both days end with return transport to your starting point.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and seats your group alone: no shared departures, no schedule built around other travelers. Bottles of mineral water travel with you. All entrance fees and taxes are included in the price. The guide is a live person who speaks your language and knows the stops well enough to answer questions as you move through them.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.

What exactly happens on the spice plantation tour?

You walk through working spice farms where cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and other crops grow, learn how they're cultivated and harvested, and taste fresh spices directly from the plants. It's a hands-on introduction to Zanzibar's history as a spice trading hub.

Can I actually swim and snorkel at Mnemba Island?

Yes. Mnemba Island has shallow, clear water and coral reefs close to shore. Snorkeling equipment is included, and you'll see colorful fish, rays and sometimes dolphins. Swimming is possible, though the island itself is private and you visit as part of the tour.

Is the Rock Restaurant lunch included, or do I pay separately?

The Rock Restaurant stop is part of the itinerary, but meals and drinks there are not included in the tour price. You order and pay for what you eat and drink while you're there.

How much walking is involved in Stonetown?

Stonetown's streets are narrow and winding, and the walking tour is described as a half-day private tour. You'll move through the historic district on foot, visiting landmarks like the House of Wonders and the Old Fort, and browsing Darajani Market. Comfortable shoes are a good idea.

What's Jozani Forest actually like to walk through?

Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park is a lush, dense forest where a guided walk takes you through the plant life and gives you a chance to spot red colobus monkeys, an endangered species that lives there. It's a nature walk, not a long hike, and the guide points out wildlife and plant species as you move through.

Does the tour include time to relax at Paje Beach, or is it just a quick stop?

Paje Beach is on the day-one itinerary and you have time to relax on the white sand, swim, or try water sports like kiteboarding if you want to. It's not a drive-by. You stop there as part of the day's flow.
