Dushanbe to Osh on Pamir Highway: 7-day mountain trek

This seven-day guided tour follows the Pamir Highway from Dushanbe to Osh, driving highland routes through Tajikistan's most remote valleys and staying with local families and in mountain camps. The itinerary includes a trek to Panorama Ridge at 4,800 meters, visits to 12th-century Yamchun Fortress and natural hot springs, and a day hike from Lenin Peak Base Camp at the foot of the Pamir range. The Experience

The route starts in Dushanbe and heads south toward Kulob, passing the Nurek hydropower station and stopping at the 11th-century Hulbuk Palace before climbing toward the Afghan border. After crossing the Shurobod pass, the landscape opens into deep rocky valleys and the road follows the Panj River through villages where the mountains rise on both sides. The first night is in a homestay in Kalaikhum village, where you eat and sleep with a local family.

From Khorog city, the tour detours to Yamchun Fortress, a 12th-century structure built on a natural rock platform with views down into the Wakhan valley. Nearby are the Bibi Fatima hot springs, their mineral-rich waters flowing from the hillside. The road then climbs inland away from the Afghan border, passing through Langar village and reaching Kargush pass after two hours of driving. Here you start a three- to four-hour trek up to Panorama Ridge at 4,800 meters, where you stand above the Great Pamir mountains of Afghanistan and watch nomadic Kyrgyz caravans moving across the high plateau. The trek descends to the car, and you continue to alpine lakes Bulunkul and Yashilkul before arriving in Alichur village.

The route crosses Akbaital pass at 4,655 meters—the highest in Tajikistan—with views of glaciers and the Muztagh Ata peak of China on clear days. Karakul lake sits at the base of this pass, and you overnight in a guesthouse there. On the final two days, you drive to Lenin Peak Base Camp in a yurt camp, where a day hike climbs to Traveler's pass at 4,130 meters to view glaciers at the foot of the peak itself. The last drive follows Kyrgyz villages and shepherd encampments down to Osh city in Kyrgyzstan, where the tour ends.
