The experience
You'll start early from Dushanbe and spend the first 3–4 hours driving through Varzob valley and the Hisar mountains, following the Varzob river. The route climbs to the Anzob pass and tunnel at 2,600 meters, then descends through Fann gorges toward the lake. A short stop along the way gives you a chance to rest and photograph the panoramic views of the Hissar range and surrounding valleys before you arrive at Iskanderkul itself.
Iskanderkul Lake sits in the heart of the Fann Mountains with turquoise water, tranquil highlands and rock formations that rise around it. Once there, you'll hike a scenic trail that leads to Fann Niagara Waterfall, a 43-meter drop known locally as the Niagara of the Fann Mountains. The hike is easy and pleasant, with panoramic viewpoints above the gorge. After lunch at a nearby restaurant (paid separately), you'll visit Snake Lake, a smaller and warmer lake close by that becomes a swimming spot in summer, then continue to Panj-Chashma, where five crystal-clear springs merge into a single river flowing into Iskanderkul. The purity of the water and the mountain silence create a sense of calm many visitors remark on. A short distance away lies Bucephalus Cave, connected to local legends of Alexander the Great and his horse.
The return journey retraces the route through Varzob Gorge and takes another 3–4 hours. The full day runs about 10 hours from start to finish. You'll travel in a minibus with other small-group participants, and your guide speaks Russian or Persian.
