The experience
The journey starts at your hotel in Dushanbe and heads east toward the Pamirs, climbing through villages and desolate terrain to cross a 2,200-meter mountain pass. From the top, Afghanistan comes into view across the Panj River, the ancient Oxus, which you follow for the rest of the day. The road runs through deep gorges and high passes, and you'll see villagers on the Afghan side moving by motorbike or with donkeys, a reminder that this is one of the world's most remote inhabited borders. National Geographic ranked the Pamir Highway among the top five places to visit in Central Asia, and the isolation here is real: the communities along this route see very few foreign visitors, and the traditions haven't shifted in generations.
You overnight in Qalai-Khumb in a guesthouse, then drive back west the following morning. The return route includes Hulbuk Fortress, the ruins of a 9th-to-12th-century settlement that once served as the center of the Huttal region. The citadel has walls 15 meters high on the south side and lower walls to the north, and the site now functions as a historical museum-reserve spread across 16 hectares. Before reaching Dushanbe, you stop at a viewpoint near Small Bazar overlooking Nurek Reservoir, an enormous earth-fill dam 75 kilometers east of the capital that supplies more than 90 percent of Tajikistan's power.

What is the Pamir Highway and why is it famous?
The Pamir Highway is a high mountain road running along the border with Afghanistan through deep gorges, high passes, glaciers and deserts.
