The experience
The tour leaves Dushanbe in the morning and climbs through the Varzob valley alongside the Varzob river, then enters the Fan Mountains where Iskandarkul waits at the heart of the range. The lake itself is the largest in the mountains, shaped like a triangle and surrounded by peaks including Chimtarga at 5,487 meters. You'll have time to swim and boat on the water, which sits 70 meters deep and covers 3.5 square kilometers.
The stops build around the lake's history and the landscape around it. Bucephalus Cave holds the legend of Alexander the Great's horse, said to have drunk from the lake during a halt and fallen ill. Locals claim the white horse still surfaces during full moons. A short hike leads to the 43-meter Fan Waterfall on the outflow river, where a rock carries an inscription from a Russian expedition in 1870. Kuli Moron, or Snake Lake, sits nearby with warmer water than Iskandarkul and its own reputation: locals say the snakes won't bite if you're in the water or have drunk from it. Panj-Chashma (Five Springs) rounds out the stops.
The full loop takes about ten hours from hotel pickup to return. You'll cover the drive, the lake time, the hikes and the lunch break in that span. Bring water beyond what's provided, wear shoes for the trails, and plan to pay for your own meal at the beach and for any boating or entrance fees on site.
