The experience

The Pamir Highway, the M41, stretches over 1,200 kilometers through four countries, and this tour covers the Tajik section from Dushanbe south toward the Afghan border. Day one starts with a pickup from your hotel and a drive to Hulbuk Castle, 165 kilometers away, where you walk the ruins of a 9th-to-11th-century royal residence that once guarded one of the Silk Road's three prized trade goods: salt. From there, the route continues to Kulyab, a city founded 2,700 years ago as a trade hub, where you visit the Mir Saeed Ali Hamadoni Complex: a mausoleum dating to the 11th–15th centuries and another landmark on the ancient Silk Road.

After lunch, you drive 169 kilometers to Qal'ai Khumb in the Darvaz district, a border village 1,200 meters above sea level where you can see across the Panj River into Afghanistan. The itinerary includes a stop at the ancient town of Karon, perched at 1,700 meters on Mount Zogik, where archaeologists have uncovered fragments of fire temples and a five-story structure dating to medieval times. At 18:00, you reach the Panj River itself (the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan), where you can photograph the Afghan side, though the military presence means stops are brief.

Day two takes you to Childukhtaron Valley, whose name translates to "valley of the forty girls" and draws from a local legend about stone formations in the landscape. On the return to Dushanbe, you visit Chilchanor, a green space in Khovaling centered on forty ancient trees said to have stood for thousands of years. The drive back passes through Baljuvan before reaching Dushanbe. Cars are in good condition, though not all have air conditioning. You'll need to arrange your own meals and accommodation outside the tour.

What can I see at Hulbuk Castle?

Hulbuk Castle is a 9th-to-11th-century fortress that served as the royal residence of Shah Khutalon and was fortified by a salt hill: salt being one of the three prized commodities traded along the Silk Road alongside gold and horses.
