The experience

The route starts in Dushanbe with a visit to the Museum of Antiquities, home to the largest Buddha statue in Central Asia, then heads south along the Panj River toward Afghanistan. Days two through four take you through the Wakhan Corridor (a narrow strip of land that once divided Russian and British empires), where you stop at Bibi Fatima hot springs, explore the Buddhist ziggurat at Vrang, and visit the Yamchun fortress overlooking the valley. The landscape shifts from river gorges to high alpine terrain as you climb toward the eastern Pamirs.

Day five is a full trek from Zong village up to the basecamp of Engels Peak, where you walk among more than 8,000 petroglyphs carved into granite by Bronze Age hunters and herders. The carvings show ibex, mountain goats, caravans and ritual symbols. You hike through narrow gorges where shepherds still tend their flocks, then camp at the foot of the peak or return to a homestay. The following days push higher: you cross the Kargush Pass at 4,344 meters, reach Yashilkul Lake at 3,719 meters where Kyrgyz nomads fish and live, and pass through the Alichur Valley, the Pamir Plateau, where Marco Polo sheep roam the colored mountains. You stop at the sacred lake Aq Baliq and spend a night in Murghab watching the Milky Way from the high desert.

The crossing into Kyrgyzstan happens at the Kizil Art Pass (4,336 meters), where you complete border formalities while taking in views of Lenin Peak. The final stretch brings you to Tulparkul Lake at 3,500 meters, where you stay in yurts and can hike toward the Lenin glacier if you choose. On the last day, you descend through the Alay Valley past herds of horses to Osh, Kyrgyzstan's second city, where you climb the sacred Solomon Mountain and end with a farewell dinner in a traditional restaurant. The vehicle is air-conditioned, bottled water is provided daily, and your guide speaks English, French, German, Russian or one of two additional languages.

Is this one for you?Small groups work well on this tour because the homestays and yurts have limited capacity and the remote sites (the petroglyphs, the nomad camps, the high passes) feel less crowded with fewer people. If you want cultural immersion over a fast-paced itinerary, the 10-day length gives you time to trek, rest at altitude and talk with Kyrgyz families rather than rushing between stops.

What are the ancient petroglyphs near Engels Peak, and how many are there to see?

The petroglyphs near Engels Peak date back to the Bronze Age and earlier, carved by Scythians, Arians and Zoroastrians into granite hillsides. There are more than 8,000 of them in one area, showing hunting scenes, mountain goats, caravans, religious symbols and unknown marks left by people who lived in the high Pamirs thousands of years ago. You see them during a day trek from Zong village to the basecamp.

Do I need a visa to enter Tajikistan, and is it included?

Tajikistan visa and GBAO permission (required to travel in the Wakhan Corridor and eastern Pamirs) are arranged depending on which option you book at checkout. Confirm the visa requirements for your nationality when you select your tour option.

Where do I sleep on this tour, and what are the conditions like?

You stay in 3-4 star hotels in Dushanbe and Osh, guesthouses in Kalaikhumb and Khorog, local homestays in villages like Hissor and Bulunkul, and yurts at Tulparkul Lake. Homestays and yurts have basic facilities. The Bulunkul homestay has pit toilets and no shower due to the remote location. One night you have the option to camp in tents near Engels Peak basecamp.

What is Yashilkul Lake, and what can I do there?

Yashilkul Lake sits at 3,719 meters in the eastern Pamirs and is one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the region. Kyrgyz nomads live around it with their herds, and you can fish in the lake or try the local fish. The stop gives you a chance to observe nomadic life and the high-altitude landscape.

Is the trek to Engels Peak basecamp difficult, and do I have to do it?

The trek is a full day hike with normal terrain that gently climbs along a small water channel. After about an hour you reach marble platforms covered in petroglyphs, then continue through a narrow gorge to the foot of Engels Peak. You can stay overnight in tents at the basecamp or return to a homestay. The choice is yours depending on fitness and preference.

What is the Pamir Highway, and how much time do we spend driving it?

The Pamir Highway is a high-altitude route through the Pamir Mountains connecting Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, passing through remote valleys and crossing multiple passes above 4,000 meters. You travel sections of it over several days, stopping to visit lakes, nomad camps, ancient sites and mountain views. The road is unpaved in places and the journey is slow, but the landscape (snowcapped peaks, glaciers and wide plateaus) is the reason for the route.
