The Experience

"Most people are nervous until their feet leave the ground," one of the Airtime Pilots told me before we started. "Then they forget to be scared." You meet the team in Mürren after taking the world's steepest cable car up from Stechelberg — four minutes straight up, which is its own kind of rush. From there, it's a short hike to the take-off field, where your pilot goes through the briefing: how to run, where to hold on, what happens when you lift. The mountains in front of you are the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. You're about to fly past them.

The actual takeoff is stranger than you'd think. A few running steps, and then the ground stops mattering. You're airborne in a tandem paraglide with your pilot controlling everything — you're just there, suspended, watching the Lauterbrunnen Valley open up below. The cliffs are close enough that you can see the texture of the rock. Waterfalls — there are 72 of them in the valley depending on the season — pour down the faces like threads. The Mürrenbach waterfall passes beneath you, and it's the kind of moment where your brain doesn't quite catch up to what your eyes are seeing. The flight lasts long enough to feel real but short enough that you're still processing it when you touch down in Stechelberg, next to the cable car station.

After landing, you've got options. Take the bus back to Lauterbrunnen, or walk the waterfall trail back down if you want to burn off the adrenaline on solid ground. Either way, you've done something most people only think about.

Top questions

How do I get to Mürren to start the paragliding?

You drive to Stechelberg and take the cable car up to Mürren — it's the world's steepest and takes 4 minutes. If you're already staying in Mürren, you skip this step.

What's the age requirement?

Minimum age is 5 years old. There's also a weight limit of 90kg (198 lbs).

How long is the actual flight?

The flight duration depends on wind and thermals, but typically lasts 20–30 minutes from takeoff to landing.

What if I'm not fit enough?

You need to be able to run a few steps at takeoff and have at least moderate fitness. Comfortable walking shoes are required for the hike to the launch field.

Do I need my own shoes and jacket?

No. Shoes and jackets are provided free of charge if you need them.

Where do I land?

You land in Stechelberg, next to the Schilthornbahn cable car station. From there, you can take a bus back or walk down via the waterfall trail.

What's included in the price?

Your professional pilot, helmet, landing fees, and all facility charges. Transport to and from Stechelberg is not included.

Is this safe for someone nervous about heights?

Tandem paragliding is controlled entirely by your pilot. Many nervous flyers find the experience calmer than they expected once airborne, but it's worth discussing any concerns before booking.
