The experience

Your day starts with a one-hour train ride from Basel to Lucerne, where you board a lake boat for the one-hour crossing to Alpnachstad. The boat glides past Hergiswil and Stansstad with the surrounding mountains in sight the whole way. At Alpnachstad you transfer to the cogwheel train, the steepest in the world, which climbs 35 minutes through alpine meadows to Pilatus Kulm, the mountain station at 2,132 meters.

At the summit you have free time to move through the viewing terraces, the panorama gallery and the dragon gallery, or to walk the marked trails and picnic areas that spread across the Krienseregg recreation zone. The multimedia presentation at the station gives context to the landscape below. Two mountain hotels sit at the station if you want to sit down over a meal (not included in the tour price).

The descent reverses the route: a cable car from Pilatus Kulm down to Kriens, a 10-minute walk to the bus stop, then a 10-minute local bus ride back to Lucerne. From there, the train carries you back to Basel. The whole day runs 7 to 9 hours. Your guide (English or German-speaking) stays with the group throughout, and every ticket and seat reservation is included in the price, so no additional transport costs arise during the day.
