The experience

You arrive at the base station and ascend Mount Pilatus by either the world's steepest cogwheel railway or the panoramic aerial cableway: both routes frame the Swiss Alps, Lake Lucerne, and alpine meadows as you climb. At the 2,132-meter summit, you have the freedom to walk the scenic trails, sit on the terrace, or simply stand in the 360° views. The driver waits at the base, so there's no rush and no group pace to match. Local legends travel with you: the tale of the dragon that once lived on Pilatus is part of what makes the mountain itself a character in the day.

Next comes the Aare Gorge, where you walk along safe, suspended walkways above the rushing river. Limestone walls tower 50 meters high and narrow to just over a meter in places. The walkway stretches over a kilometer and the cool mist and roar of glacial water fill the narrow canyon. Most fitness levels manage it, and the walkway is designed for the views: countless photo stops and a close look at how Switzerland's geology carved itself over thousands of years.

The day closes at St. Beatus Caves, perched above Lake Thun. You follow a forest path past waterfalls to the cave entrance, then explore over a kilometer of illuminated tunnels, vast chambers, and underground waterfalls on your own. The legend of Saint Beatus defeating a dragon here sits alongside the crystal-clear pools and rock formations. Outside, the cliffside terrace frames Lake Thun and the mountains. A museum and restaurant are there if you want them. Your driver collects you at the gate and brings you back.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, German, Swedish and Finnish.

What's the difference between the cogwheel railway and the cable car up Mount Pilatus?

The cogwheel railway is the world's steepest and climbs the mountain directly. The aerial cableway offers panoramic views as it rises. Both reach the 2,132-meter summit, and you choose which one suits you on the day.

How long do I spend walking at the Aare Gorge?

The walkway stretches over a kilometer along the suspended path above the river. The walk itself takes as long as you want to linger at photo stops and take in the 50-meter limestone walls. Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour here.

Can I explore St. Beatus Caves on my own, or is there a guide inside?

St. Beatus Caves are self-guided once you enter. You walk through the illuminated tunnels and chambers at your own pace. Your driver meets you at the gate when you're ready to leave.

Is the Aare Gorge walk suitable if I'm not very fit?

The walkway is suitable for most fitness levels and is safe and well-maintained. You set your own pace along the suspended path, so you can take breaks whenever you need them.

What does the 10-hour day include, and what should I bring?

All transport, entry tickets to Pilatus, the Aare Gorge, and St. Beatus Caves, plus a multilingual driver, bottled water, WiFi on board, and an air-conditioned vehicle are included. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket for the mountain, and a camera. Food and drinks beyond the provided water are not included.

Do I need to arrange my own way to the starting point, or is pickup included?

Pickup is included. Your driver collects your group and brings you back at the end of the day, so you don't need to arrange separate transport to or from the tour.
