Your guide meets you at Basel Train Station and takes you by train to Lucerne. From there, you board the dragon aerial cable car (a glass cabin suspended over the Alpine landscape) for the ascent to Mt. Pilatus. The 360-degree windows frame the Lucerne region as you rise. At the top, you stand at 2,132 meters with a choice: stay at the restaurant to absorb the valley views, or hike to the summit for a bird's-eye perspective of historic Lucerne, the surrounding lakes, and the rolling peaks beyond. Your guide shares the mountain's history, including the legends of dragons and the disputed burial of Pontius Pilate in its foothills.

The descent follows the cogwheel train (the steepest rack railway in the world), which climbs the foothills from 2,073 meters. Your guide narrates the history, culture, and landscape as the Alps unfold around you. From May through October, you then take a boat from Alpnachstad across Lake Lucerne back to the city. From November through April, you cruise the full round of the lake instead. Either way, the water crossing closes the day's loop before your guide and driver return you to Basel.

The tour includes the standard rail pass, the cogwheel experience (May to mid-October), and the Lake Lucerne cruise pass. Lunch at Mt. Pilatus is optional and arranged at checkout. The route is wheelchair accessible, and prams, strollers, and specialized infant seats are available. All physical fitness levels can join. The cable car and trains do the climbing.
