The experience

You start at Basel SBB train station, where your private guide meets you. From there, the train carries you toward Lucerne through Swiss landscapes, and the guide travels with your group the whole way. Once you arrive in Lucerne, you board a one-hour boat that departs from the city's bay and cruises across Lake Lucerne to Alpnachstad, passing lakeside towns and the surrounding Alps the entire ride.

At Alpnachstad, you step onto the cogwheel railway, the steepest in the world, for a 35-minute climb to Pilatus Kulm. The train follows a narrow track along rocky ridges and through alpine meadows, and the views open up as you rise. Once at the summit, you have time to move at your own pace: the viewing terraces and panorama gallery are there to explore, and two mountain hotels sit on the peak if you want to rest. The Dragon Gallery and scenic viewpoints fill the hours before you descend.

The way down is a gondola to Kriens, then a local bus back into Lucerne for a short walk through the old town. You'll have time to photograph the Chapel Bridge, one of the city's most recognizable landmarks, before the train carries you back to Basel SBB. The whole day runs seven to nine hours from start to finish.
