The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the way the light broke through the trees as our jeep rolled into Yala—sort of golden but not soft, more like it meant business. Our driver, Saman, greeted us with this quick grin and handed over binoculars (which I didn’t realize I’d actually need so much). You could already hear birds shouting from somewhere deep in the brush. I fumbled with my camera and nearly missed a monkey leaping overhead—Saman just laughed and pointed out a peacock strutting along like it owned the place.

It was cooler than I expected that morning, almost chilly against my arms. Breakfast happened right there in the jeep: egg sandwiches wrapped in paper, still warm somehow, and sweet tea that tasted faintly smoky. We stopped when Saman spotted fresh leopard tracks—he crouched down to show us how to tell if they were new (I still don’t really get it).
