The experience
You arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo and are picked up for the drive north to Anuradhapura, where the first three days unfold among the ruins of Sri Lanka's first ancient capital. The sprawling site holds the Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya dagobas, the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi Tree (the oldest authenticated tree in the world, grown from a sapling of the Buddha's enlightenment tree), and the intricate stonework of Isurumuniya Temple. From Anuradhapura you move to Sigiriya, the 5th-century rock fortress that rises nearly 200 meters from the jungle. The ascent climbs over 1,200 steps through the colossal paws of a lion, past the Mirror Wall with ancient frescoes halfway up, to the royal palace ruins at the summit. A day trip from Sigiriya takes you by jeep through Minneriya National Park, where large herds of wild elephants gather around the ancient tank during the dry season, along with sambar deer, crocodiles, monkeys and exotic birds.
The route then carries you to Kandy, Sri Lanka's last royal capital, where you visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (a UNESCO site housing a relic believed rescued from the Buddha's funeral pyre), and attend an evening Kandyan Cultural Dance Show with traditional drumming, folk dances and a fire-walking finale. Between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, you stop at Ramboda Falls and tour the Royal Botanical Garden Peradeniya, which spans 147 acres and holds over 4,000 plant species, including an Orchid House with 300 varieties and an Avenue of Palms. In Nuwara Eliya, the heart of tea country, you visit a working tea factory to watch the entire process (from plucking the two leaves and a bud through withering, rolling, fermenting and drying), and taste freshly brewed Ceylon tea overlooking the rolling hills. The next leg includes a scenic train journey from Nanuoya to Ella, a three-hour ride winding through tea plantations, misty mountains, waterfalls and villages, crossing the iconic Nine Arch Bridge. From Ella you hike to Little Adam's Peak for 360-degree views of the Ella Gap and tea estates, and visit the Nine Arch Bridge at sunrise or sunset when light is best and crowds thin.
Yala National Park comes next, with an early morning jeep safari from 6:00 am to 10:00 am when leopards (the park holds one of the world's highest densities) are most active. The open-air jeep takes you through thorny scrublands, lagoons and rocky outcrops where you may spot elephants, sloth bears, water buffalo, spotted deer, crocodiles and migratory birds. The evening moves you to Mirissa beach on the southern coast, where you relax as the sky turns orange and pink at sunset. The following morning brings a whale and dolphin watching tour lasting 3 to 5 hours. The waters off the southern coast are a major migratory route, and sightings often include blue whales, sperm whales and pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins. You then travel to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and fortified by the Dutch in the 17th. Walking the ancient ramparts offers views of the Indian Ocean. The cobblestone streets hold colonial buildings, churches, mosques, museums, the iconic lighthouse and the Dutch Reformed Church. On the final leg toward Colombo, a boat safari on the Madu River winds through mangrove forests and a UNESCO biosphere reserve where you spot water monitor lizards, monkeys and kingfishers, with stops at a Buddhist temple and Cinnamon Island to learn traditional Ceylon cinnamon cultivation. The Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project offers an educational visit to the hatchery where you may see baby turtles only days old and, depending on timing, release newly hatched turtles into the ocean at sunset. The tour concludes with a drive to Bandaranaike International Airport for departure.

What's the best time of year to see elephants at Minneriya National Park during this tour?
Minneriya National Park's "The Gathering" happens during the dry season, typically July to October, when large herds of wild elephants congregate around the ancient Minneriya Tank. Outside those months, elephant sightings are less predictable.
Can I see leopards on the Yala safari, and when are they most active?
Yala National Park holds one of the world's highest densities of leopards. The early morning safari runs from 6:00 am to 10:00 am, when leopards are most active and your chances of spotting them are best. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the cool morning hours offer the likeliest window.
What happens on the scenic train ride from Nanuoya to Ella?
The three-hour train journey winds through Sri Lanka's hill country, passing vibrant green tea plantations where you can spot tea pluckers in colorful saris, misty mountains, cascading waterfalls, charming villages, dark tunnels and the iconic Nine Arch Bridge. Open windows let you feel the cool air and photograph the landscape.
How long does the whale and dolphin watching tour from Mirissa last?
The whale and dolphin watching tour lasts 3 to 5 hours, departing early to take advantage of calmer seas and increased animal activity. The waters off Sri Lanka's southern coast are a major migratory route for blue whales, sperm whales, fin whales and pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins.
What can I do at the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project?
The Kosgoda project is a sanctuary for endangered sea turtles. You'll learn about the five species that nest here, see the hatchery where eggs are kept safe until they hatch, and view baby turtles only days old in their tanks. Depending on the time of your visit, you may participate in releasing newly hatched turtles into the ocean at sunset.
